want you to see. following this morning's testimony, gabby giffords and mark kelly met with president obama in the oval office. so david corn, i show you all that and i ask how can the momentum to the extent that momentum exists right now on the president and the white house side, how can it be maintained? how do you maintain that level of emotional testimony? >> well, it was quite an emotional moment watching gabby giffords get up there courageously and her husband who i've met in the past i have to say is damn impressive. he was a hero for going up in the space shuttle and now he's a hero for taking on this hard issue and doing it with such great aplomb. it's important, keep him and gabby giffords and the kids in newtown, keep them in the spotlight. let them have the platform they want. the only way anything happens on the gun violence prevention front is if the intensity level remains on the side of people looking to change the status quo. you know, you know on the side of the nra and extremists on that side, there is already the intensity. it's always been there. they care about t

also hear, gabby giffords, his wife, the former congresswoman may also make a statement. what do you want to hear in there today? >> well i think we've all believed for a long time there is, there is something that can be done, particularly in the area of background checks. we want to make sure that the criminals don't have access to guns. and those who are not, in a mental state, to have guns, they shouldn't have them. there are things that we can do there to broaden background checks that currently happen. so i hope that that's where we can make some progress the. martha: you don't hear that much about the mental equation here. who is really pushing for that out there and making their their priority in this discussion? >> well, there have been talks about that. it's a difficult, difficult, nut to crack. it really is. but, i got to make some progress there. i think that is where, like i say, if you want to really impact gun violence, that's where you can make a difference. martha: all right. senator flake, thank you. you have a busy day ahead. we appreciate you being with us, sir. t

powerful on the floor when gabby giffords. you said there is preparation that takes place behind the scenes. this is something you can talk to no one else can. what does it take for her to get out there? what preparation is involved? >> for example, gabby had an opportunity to give her first speech about six weeks ago now to an organization of speech pathologists and professionals. it was a five-sentence speech. she had to memorize it. she was able to deliver it. she practiced it for me when i saw her in washington. she did a fantastic job. today you can see she knew it well enough to recite it and was also reading it for guidance. for her to get to that moment it takes a tremendous amount of rehearsal and practice. gabby has the courage. you can clearly see the resolve. i think it's really important to note. she's not just reading that statement in a rote way. you could hear the emotion and the power behind the statement she was making because she feels strongly about this. we have to make sure we deal with reducing gun violence in a responsible way. >> one thing dana mentioned was after t
